Most motorists experience insurance cost jumps

A quarter of Irish motorists in an AA Ireland survey said their motor insurance premiums had risen by between 30pc-50pc at their last renewal, writes Brian Byrne.

A further three in ten of the 3,000 people asked said their premiums had risen by between 15pc-30pc.

In all, three out of every five of the respondents has seen increases of at least 15pc over the previous year.

Conor Faughnan, AA Director of Consumer Affairs, says a report from earlier this year by Minister Eoghan Murphy and the Cost of Insurance Working Group must be implemented quickly. The report took on board recommendations from AA Ireland that included a greater use of Automatic Number P late Recognition technology by the gardai, to identify uninsured drivers.

According to the survey, drivers aged between 35 and 46 were the most likely to have seen an increase in their premium.
